Virgin Music is a British recording label founded by British entrepreneur
Sir Richard Branson. The first release on the label was the classic
progressive rock album Tubular Bells by multi-instrumentalist Mike
Oldfield in 1973. Virgin Music introduced bands like the Henry Cow,
the Sex Pistols, Camper Van Beethoven and Boy George to the world
music scene, and at one point was the producer of the Rolling Stones.
Sold to EMI in the early 1990s, the Virgin Music roster has grown
to include international artists such as Ben Harper, Lenny Kravitz,
pop stars Blue, Atomic Kitten and Janet Jackson just to name a few.
The label also boasts an extensive local roster with the likes of
Silverchair, Little Birdy, Missy Higgins, Kisschasy and The Cat
Empire.
The artist roster is split between the three Label Managers, depending in most instances on their individual taste in music, with the Head of Virgin overseeing all artists. The Marketing Coordinator assists the Label Managers, ensuring that day-to-day tasks are completed. The Virgin Music marketing team have their hands in everything, from production of the finished CD, to planning how and where to place emphasis in the media, such as press, radio, TV and online, (in conjunction with our Promotions team), as well as the approaches employed in gaining profile at your local record shop (working with Sales).
