Artist Relations Manager
How long have you been working @ EMI & what was your first job here?
I have been working at EMI since Sept 2001. I joined here as Artist Relations Manager, Virgin.
Current role @ EMI?
Artist Relations Manager, Virgin. I am the point of contact between Promotions department & Artist Management/overseas offices, for co-ordinating publicity for Virgin tours/album releases. I am also responsible for ticketing for shows.
What qualifications do you have or what on the job training did you do to get to where you are now?
No qualifications. I worked hard in different departments at various record companies to learn all areas relating to my current job but I have needed to have sound admin, coordination and negotiation skills that have been refined and developed along the way.
A day in the life….
No one day is the same! There can be a number of album releases or tours being worked on at the same time. In the case of a project (whether it's a new album or an act that is touring), together with the Promotions dept, we plan a suitable timeline for publicity to run, then I co-ordinate interview time/special requests with management/overseas offices. In the case of a tour, I will spend the weeks leading up to, preparing the 'on-ground' publicity schedule, then triple (!) check everything immediately prior to the artists’ arrival. During their stay in Sydney (& sometimes interstate), I co-ordinate the actual running of the day/s, to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible.
Best part of your job?
Regularly seeing & hearing great music! Watching the word spread on exciting new Australian artists!
Best part about working for EMI Music Australia?
The people & the artist roster!
First job you ever had in the music industry?
I started in music retail when I left school. (Music was & still is my hobby, so I couldn't have been working in a better place at the time!!) I dealt regularly with the sales dept from various record companies. After 5 yrs, I moved over to work in sales for a record company in Brisbane. Working in a small branch enabled me to be hands on & learn a lot from the different departments. From there, I travelled a little, before moving to Sydney to join the Promotions Department of a record company. I again took time out to travel, & worked in the UK in my 'dream job' as Artist Relations Manager. After returning to Australia & working for a short time in publicity, I was fortunate enough to join EMI in the role I am in now.
Most defining music moment?
Meeting Duran Duran on their last tour. They are they reason I chose a career in the music industry!
Useful advice to someone wanting a start in the industry?
If you are really keen, be persistent & patient! Be ready to work very hard. It’s definitely not glitz & glamour!!
